BIOGRAPHY
Jean Racine, poet and playwright, was born in La Ferte-Milon, France into a bourgeoise family. He was orphaned early in life and was reared by his grandparents who wree Jansenists. He was educated at the College de Harcourt in Paris where he met Moliere. He broke with the Jansenists when his theatrical career afforded him success, but he later reconciled with them. Afterwards he became the Royal Historiographer.
Racine is considered to be one of the great French tragic dramatists. His first play, AMASIE, was published in 1660, but it has been lost. His best-known play, PHEDRE, was written in 1677.
Jean Racine died in 1699.
