The runes are a set of 24 alphabet letters usually carved on small tablets. A rune set includes 24 symbols with one blank, which is known as “Wyrd” or “Odin” named after the god Odin, who is credited for having discovered the runes. The word Rune is said to have come from the Indo-European word” ru” which means “secret thing” and the Old Germanic word “runa” which means “whisper”.

Runes have been widely used by the Scandinavians by shamans to heal the sick and tell the future. Runes were carved into walls and on walking staffs for protection and guidance. Runes have been mentioned in early Anglo Saxon poetry and legend as a key to wisdom. Runic symbols have been also used as a talisman for warriors. The runes have gained increased popularity during the “new age” movement as a substitute for tarot cards for psychic divination by fortunetellers. Each rune represents an extended reality. Runic symbols cover a variety of archetypes and ideas, many to do with agricultural and battle symbols.

The oldest known and most popular rune symbols include what is known as the “Elder Futhark”. The runic alphabet begins with the letters F,U,Th,A,R,K hence the name “Futhark” is attached to describing the sets the runic alphabet. Here is a brief description of the symbols of the Elder Futhark . The symbols themselves are based on these letters but look slightly different. Keep in mind, in a runic set, the “u” looks upside down and the “th” is looks somewhat like the letter “p”, or a thorn. The following are only short descriptions of the meanings.

F- “Fehu”-Success, Wealth It is associated with cattle

U- “Uraz”-Power, wisdom and knowledge. It is associated with Aurochs, a great oxen

Th- “Thurizas” –Protection. It is associated with Thorns that protect a plant.

A-“Ansuz” –Magic. It is associated with God and the divine.

R- “Raidho” Wheel, Motion. Associated with inner and outer journeys.

K- “Kenaz” Knowledge, Torch of Illumination. Associated with transformation.

Most rune sets or books about the runes will offer a more complete description. Associations have also been suggested between runes, Zodiac signs and Tarot symbols. Runes are mostly sold in sets, ranging from inexpensive plastic to pricey jade sets. They can be found in most New Age or Metaphysical book or eclectic gift shops. Readings from fortunetellers who use runes for divination can be found at most psychic fairs.
